By Joe Vaccaro For the seventh task of the Canastota Apprentice, students were instructed to create a news release highlighting good news and programs in Canastota. Team Titletown used their business skills and asked their teacher Patricia Ragan for a way to make the newsletter double sided. "Asking questions is very important" said Ragan in the boardroom today. Team Jascajad had some rough patches with their newsletter. They spelled an Administrator's name incorrectly, among many other spelling and grammar errors. Also, Jascajad was noted for stapling the two sheets of paper together instead of printing front and back.They had some incorrect information regarding the murals in the High School Gym; the murals were done by Student Government with help from Art Honor Society, not the Art Club. After studying the appearance of their newsletter, one judge commented "There is a lot of negative, empty space" said Kristie Boisen, a longtime judge for the Canastota Apprentice. Titletown on the other hand was complimented on their points of interest being easy to spot, as well as the headlines of the stories being very creative. Ragan and the judges were all very impressed with team Titletown's newsletter, "it mimicked the Canastota webpage" said Ragan. The judges were very impressed that Titletown addressed Music, Art, Sports, and also Education in their newsletter. After a short deliberation amongst the judges and Patricia Ragan, they decided who had won and who to fire. Team Titletown gains yet another win. Then the judges and Ragan proceeded to the firing. After these warnings came the firing, Stephen Hart was fired for task seven. He was the one that typed the newsletter containing many errors and Ragan thought he had not worked up to his full potential. Hart was re-hired after this to create a good news column every week. For their next task, the teams are to make arrangements for an FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) and Apprentice award ceremony at Graziano's in Canastota. This event will be a red carpet affair complete with press and local business' names on a picture background.
A couple of years ago, a high school junior inquired about starting a new club in Canastota. After meeting with the local Rotary Club, talking to the principal, and finding students interested in joining, the idea was approved, thus creating our Interact Club. Interact is a volunteer based organization for kids in high school. Our members dedicate their time and efforts to raise money, help out those in need, and benefit their community. Over the past two years, we have traveled to New Orleans with Operation Southern Comfort, sent members to Nicaragua for a medical mission, hosted events with Rotary (ie. Pancake Day for the town vote, a Christmas party, and Loads of Love), and are currently in the process of planning/building a playground. The playground is set to be located next to the public pool, in the center of town, so it will be available to everyone. It is going to be an all access play area with swings, two play sets, and other hands-on activities. There will also be educational pieces like a Spanish- English sign. We recently voted to have this playground be our main focus and are working on fundraising for it. On May 23rd we are hosting a volleyball tournament in the Laidlaw Gym; the money raised will go towards the playground and Wanderer’s Rest. This club is always looking for more students who are eager to pitch in and help their community.

May – Fly Fishing workshop sponsored by the Madison County Chapter of Trout Unlimited - Release of the Brook Trout The FFA has been very busy this year. In the fall members took a trip to the SUNY Morrisville Aqua Center and harvested and fertilized Brook Trout eggs which were brought back here. The eggs were hatched and the fish are about 3cm long at this point. They will be released in the Canastota Creek in May. The Fall Fruit Sale was once again a success. Money from the sale is used to purchase supplies, materials, awards, T-Shirts and supplement travel expenses for trips. Members have been working in the Canastota greenhouse starting vegetable plants for the Madison Correctional Facilities garden project. The produce from plants will be used in the facility kitchen which will reduce tax payer expenses. Any excess produce will be donated to local food banks. Plants will be picked up by facility staff in late May. In the meantime students will be maintaining upkeep of the plants. On April 20 FFA members also participated in the Canal Clean Sweep project. Students assisted other volunteers clean up the areas along the canal front and at the Canal Museum.

FBLA Wins State Recognition
From April 10 - 12, nearly 600 members of the Future Business Leaders of America gathered at Rochester’s Riverside Convention Center for their annual State Leadership Conference. Canastota High School’s chapter of FBLA sent six members to the conference. Throughout the three-day event, over 20 students from New York State FBLA campaigned and gave speeches in an effort to seek positions available on the incoming state officer team. Student candidates were required to give speeches, caucus, and answer any questions of the voting delegation. Canastota sophomore, Derick Trost, was elected to serve as next year’s New York State Vice President for District 7. In this capacity, Derick will be responsible for coordinating all of the activities of the district which includes Madison, Oneida, and Herkimer counties. Jacob Fleming, Canastota High School sophomore, finished his term as State District 7 Vice President and delivered his farewell speech on Thursday evening. Jacob Fleming advanced to the national level in two events finishing 3rd in Introduction to Parliamentary Procedure and 2nd in Introduction to Technology Concepts. Derick Trost, who prepared the local chapter annual report, received first place recognition and will compete this summer in Aneheim as well. Paul Gregoris and Ariel Orcutt competed in Battle of the Chapters where they finished in second place. The Canastota Chapter nominated Mrs. Mary Reina from Frankfort for the prestigious honor of being named FBLA’s Business Person of the Year. Mrs. Reina was selected to receive this award and was honored at the Awards Ceremony on Friday. The Canastota chapter also received recognition for several chapter participation awards that were presented during the conference. The following were awarded:
State Program of Work Awards At the conference, the Canastota Chapter was recognized as one of the top five outstanding chapters in the state – receiving fourth place recognition for their efforts during the year. New York State FBLA is composed of nearly 5000 members in 170 chapters. Canastota members are looking forward to attending the National Leadership Conference being held this June in Anaheim, California. Fundraising activities are being planned to raise funds for this trip. We hope you will support the Canastota Chapter at their upcoming chicken barbeque being held at the school on May 21!
Through the amazing leadership skills of two seniors here at Canastota High School, an incredible idea became fulfilled over Spring Break. Jacob Morris and Audrey Soper had the idea to paint “Raider Nation” and “We are Family” in the High School Gym to bring more pride and joy into our school and to our student body. The idea was brought before Supt. Bragan, who encouraged the students to present the idea to the Board of Education for approval. Over spring break, while other students were taking a much needed break from school activities, Student Government and National Art Honor Society students spent countless hours designing, drawing and painting our high school gym After painting the letters, students had the idea to paint the sword logo on the front of the gym wall, which is an amazing accomplishment to paint in such detail on a large scale. The sword logo was originally created by Ron Stewart, CHS Instrumental Teacher for new marching band uniforms in 2003. This new logo replaced the original Raiders Logo which was used prior to 2002. The logo was so well received that it has been “adopted” as our official logo since that time. The overwhelming feeling of pride overcomes you as you step into the High School Gym and see the paintings for the first time. This student led project was an amazing achievement and one that will be remembered for many years to come. Students Participate in NYSSMA All-State Choir Congratulations to Amber Courtwright, Emily Fox, Michael Getty, and Connor McDonald for auditioning and being selected from the surrounding counties to perform in this year's NYSSMA Area All-State Choirs. The music festival was held Friday, February 2 and Saturday, February 3 at Ithaca College.
The Canastota FFA Chapter is currently doing a community service project in conjunction with our national organization and Dodge Trucks. You may have seen the commercial during the 4th quarter of the Superbowl about farmers sponsored by Dodge and the National FFA Association. They are working together on a collaborative effort to fight hunger here in the U.S. It is called "Feeding the World - Starting at Home". Each time someone goes on the Dodge website www.ramtrucks.com and views the video played during the superbowl, Dodge will be donating (a total of $1,000,000!!) to the FFA Foundation for this project. The FFA chapter here at Canastota High School has made a commitment to assist in this project. Our FFA chapter is putting "ads" in our district newsletters, website etc. We will also have a booth at our annual "Health and Wellness Fair" on March 14 to help spread the word about this project, the hunger situation here in the U.S., in Madison County and how people can help. February, 2013 The Canastota FBLA-PBL chapter attended the annual Spring District Meeting held at Herkimer BOCES in Herkimer, NY on Monday, February 4. Seventeen Canastota High School students attended the all-day event along with nearly 160 students and 11 chapters from Madison, Oneida, and Herkimer counties. The activities of the day included written and performance competitive events in the areas of business and technology. Canastota High School came away with several awards including several students advancing directly to the state level. Six CHS students will advance to the state competition to represent District 7 in the speaking/elimination events. The State Leadership Conference will be held in Rochester this April. Elimination Events Art students receive Scholastic Art Awards
The Canastota Art Department would like to announce and congratulate the following students for receiving the honor of having their artwork accepted into the annual juried Scholastics Art Awards show held at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse. The students’ artwork was selected by judges and chosen from 4,600 art pieces submitted throughout Central New York. Dominique Cesario, 8th grade student of art teacher Melissa Buneo, received a Gold Key for her digital art titled “Super Losers” and an Honorable Mention was received by Makayla LaRue for her piece titled “Eye Candy”. Brianne Buda, a senior of art teacher Denise Whalen, received a Gold Key for her Photography titled “Yellow Book”. Gold Key winners will also have the honor of national consideration. Elijah Cary, a junior student of art teacher, Kristie Boisen, received an Honorable mention for his mixed media art titled “No Skateboarding.” Audrey Soper and Jacob Wimmer, seniors at CHS also under the instruction of art teacher Kristie Boisen, received an Honorable Mention for their Art Portfolios, consisting of eight pieces within a selected theme. Soper’s theme consisted of digital drawings and Wimmer’s theme consisted of figure drawings. All students who participated in Scholastics should be congratulated on their hard work and level of creativity that led them to this great honor. The Scholastics Art Show will be held at Onondaga Community College at the Whitney Applied Technology Center until March 2nd. This exhibition is free and open to the public. | |||||||||||||||||||||

Picture (L-R) Paul Gregoris, Nichole Delaney, Jacob Fleming, and Hafeezah Lewis Canastota High School FBLA Members Attend National Fall Leadership Conference in Charlotte, NC The 2012 FBLA National Fall Leadership Conference was held during November in Charlotte, North Carolina. Four Canastota High School members, Nichole Delaney, Jacob Fleming, Paul Gregoris, and Hafeezah Lewis, attended the conference with their advisor, Ms. Elizabeth Garofalo. While at the conference, the Canastota members participated in general sessions, attended workshops, and participated in the Battle of the Best Competition for New York State. Canastota members placed in the top three for this event. Hafeezah Lewis placed first, Paul Gregoris placed second, and Nichole Delaney took first place honors in this event. Paul and Nichole advanced to represent New York State in the Battle of the States where they helped New York State place 6th out of 30 states participating. While at the conference, members toured the Bank of America Football Stadium, where the Carolina Panthers call home.
