Deputy Superintendent: Jason A. Mitchell

120 Roberts Street
Canastota, NY 13032

Dear Canastota Community-

It is my honor to be in my sixth year as the District's Deputy Superintendent. Together over the past five and half years we have implemented a number of important changes focused on providing the best possible instruction for our students in order to provide them with meaningful opportunities to achieve academic and social success while in our halls and beyond. Below are some of the many things we have been working on:
  • Units of Study for Writing for grades K-8
  • Raider 1:1 Chrombook Initiative
  • Makerspace and Imaginespace settings for our students to explore STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math)
  • Building Inclusion for all of our students
  • Focused professional development for teachers in best instructional practices, working effectively with students from poverty, inclusion, meaningful integration of technology, student-centered instruction and building positive relationships with students
  • Participating in regional professional development on balanced literacy, guided and shared reading
  • Improved New Teacher Induction Program
    • two-day professional development experience geared toward setting new teachers up to be successful in Canastota
    • includes a bus tour of our community
  • Year-long new teacher book club
  • Writing a guaranteed and viable curriculum for each content area using Rubicon Atlas, a web-based curriculum mapping tool (once completed this will be published for parents)
  • Curriculum Alignment Process (CAP) that allows teachers the opportunity to analyze student achievement data, revise written curricula and action plan for improved student achievement
    • CAP also allows us to align our written, taught and assessed curricula
  • Created a District Advisory Team Action Plan with fresh, new ideas meant to move the District forward
Our teachers and administrators are focused on continuous improvement and doing what is best for our students. Please feel free to reach out to any member of the administrative team or me if you have questions.
